2018 marks the 20th season of BMW M as the “Official Car of MotoGP ™”.  Since the beginning of its partnership with MotoGP organizer Dorna Sports, BMW M has repeatedly brought innovative ideas to the collaboration – and with ever new technologies they continue to ensure maximum safety on the racetrack.

In 2001, the new BMW Z8 was presented to the world public for the first time as part of the MotoGP ™. At the same time, the BMW Motorrad Boxer Cup celebrated its premiere on a World Championship weekend. In 2005, this competition was transformed into the BMW Motorrad Power Cup. At the end of the 2003 season, the best performing rider in qualifying sessions throughout the MotoGP season was awarded with the BMW Award. Today the award is called the BMW M Award and is highly sought after by the MotoGP pilots.

In 2006 BMW M GmbH took over the commitment as “Official Car of MotoGP ™”. Time and time again, BMW M GmbH contributes greatly to the fascinating events and the fleet of M vehicles present was a big part of the success of the first night race in Qatar 2008.  And since 2010, the BMW M Motorhome has been an important connecting point in the paddock. In 2012, BMW M GmbH expanded its commitment once again. The three-time world champion and Dorna safety consultant Loris Capirossi has been named as the BMW M MotoGP ™ expert, and the BMW M MotoGP ™ Experience has also launched an exclusive and attractive incentive program.

The BMW M GmbH also sets new highlights every season with new Safety Cars.  On display are the latest models and impressive technical innovations – And this is what distinguishes the BMW M MotoGP ™ Safety Cars of the past, present and future. In 2013, the BMW M6 Gran Coupé celebrated its premiere by becoming a safety car. In 2014, the BMW M4 Coupé caused quite a stir as well. In the 2015 season, BMW M introduced the newly developed and innovative injection system for the first time in the BMW M4 MotoGP ™ Safety Car. The next highlight followed shortly in the 2016 season: as the spectacular new BMW M2 Coupé debuted as the MotoGP ™ Safety Car, spearheading the Safety Car fleet. In the 2018 season, the new BMW M5 MotoGP ™ Safety Car took the lead, guiding the field of riders in the premier motorcycle class.
